The Anti-Hero

What is an anti-hero? An anti-hero is a protagonist who typically lacks the traditional traits and qualities of a hero, such as trustworthiness, courage, and honesty. Unorthodox in actions-- acts contrary to society’s standards.

Qualities: Will have the reader’s sympathy— although this is sometimes difficult for us Often has glaring imperfections Has inner demons– we learn about these during the course of the story Is often a screw-up, outsider, or loner

Qualities: Struggles with good and bad decisions Riddled with paradoxical traits– ex: is selfish, but helps others Often will voluntarily help the innocent/ weak

The Bad They: aren’t role models are, at times, selfish are motivated by self interest often make bad choices because it’s easier will embody bad behaviors when “wronged” will show little remorse for bad behavior

Group Work Brainstorm as many anti-heroes in your assigned category as you can think of from books, comic books, TV shows, and movies. List the characteristics that each character possesses that makes them an anti-hero Remember, the anti-hero is NOT the antagonist! Create a mini-poster putting an illustration of your anti-hero at the center. Display anti-hero characteristics around the hero Add background/use plenty of color! Prepare to present! 
