ASRSP Monthly Meeting September 20, 2016 Research Portal ASRSP Monthly Meeting September 20, 2016

Agenda How it all Started Making it Happen Demo of Application Looking Ahead

Getting Started

Working with Users Pulled together focus groups of research staff from across the university Started with the questions: What would help faculty and staff manage research at Northwestern? What would that look like? Engaging faculty to review and weigh in on prioritization

Some Work-products

What we Learned Research is complicated to manage, involving many systems There is a need for one, easy application to bring all of the necessary information together Identified over 25 features to be included in the application Access to information can be an obstacle Clear, transparent financials are the biggest priority for faculty

Making it Happen

Leadership Pulled together a Steering Committee of school, research, and information technology leadership. Worked to plan how we would tackle expressed needs Established an Executive Committee of executive school, research, financial, and information technology leadership Confirmed and approved plan and expanded access

The Plan Work quickly and get the highest priority features out first Build on user feedback to refine and improve features Build using technology that pulls from source systems Three major releases: August, 2016. February, 2017, August, 2017

What is Different Investigators have expanded access to view all sponsored projects where they have key role: PI, Co-I, Co-PI, Mentor, etc. Staff have expanded access to view all investigators’ sponsored projects and pending proposals

What is the Same We built the application using information from standard Cognos BI reports Same calculations, etc. Data in the application is 24 hours old Same as if you were to run a GM045 in the current period
