Foundational Logistics: Day-to-Day SI Operations What you as faculty need to know:

Scheduling of classrooms for SI sessions SI Area cubbies hold max 12-15 students Can schedule large sessions in empty classrooms Have a room in mind? Let me know. All reservations must go through our Events Scheduling Dept. SI Leaders ARE permitted to run sessions unsupervised in classrooms on campus except during your regular class session

How do an SI Leader’s weekly hours break down? Typical Schedule of Average SI Leader Job Responsibility Hours per Week 1. Attend SI Class Meetings 3-4, depending on the course 2. Hold SI Sessions 2-6, depending on how many CRNs are being attended/supported 3. Plan for Sessions (complete paperwork) (allowed flat amount of 30 min. per session) 1-3 hours, depending on # of SI sessions held weekly 4. Meeting with Instructor 0.5 hours 5. Attending Mentor Meetings 0.5 hours (8 hrs. spread over semester TOTAL HOURS: 7-14 (max allowed is 19)

Your Leader’s Assistance in the Classroom Goal is to maximize student contact = better attendance at SI sessions Two caveats to keep in mind: 1. Your Leader is not permitted to grade papers for you…sorry to disappoint you! 2. Your Leader is not allowed to run your class while you are absent—liability issue *However, Leader can hold an SI session during regular class time IF the session is held in our SI area or another classroom besides the usual location.

Completing Weekly Paperwork…excellent training for future professional careers! EVERY MONDAY BY 5 PM, for the previous week, your Leader MUST: Turn in a Weekly Time Log (WTL) with your signature Turn in 1 Session Plan (SP) Make sure their digital timesheet (called WTE) is updated through the previous Friday. --If the Leader missed a training (Mentor Meeting), then a makeup must be turned in for that as well. SP WTL

Each weekly duty not fulfilled equals a WARNING… E-mail notification to you and Leader 5 warnings = dismissal from Program

When Your Leader is Absent… Leader must send an email to both you and me to communicate absence Leader needs a way to communicate absence to your students --share class email list with Leader OR --Leader can use the Remind App

Foster sense of teamwork with your Leader Hold regular weekly meetings See agendas for 1st meeting and subsequent meetings Allow Leader to promote SI EVERY class meeting Let your students know regularly what a valuable resource your Leader is—let them see the two of you working together closely! When possible, allow your Leader to provide mini-lessons to the class View yourself as your Leader’s Mentor—many want to become educators :=)…some change their career goal after working with you!!

A Suggestion… If the semester is progressing well and you are full of gratitude for your SI Leader, why not show it by taking your Leader out to lunch for one of your weekly meetings? Or providing lunch at your office?

Goal for SI Sessions: Leader does less talking; students take a more active role SI session is NOT a rehash of your lecture Leader should be pinpointing areas of difficulty to emphasize (notice in class and/or receive guidance from you) Leader needs to plan engaging activities that involve ALL attendees in applying the content Students should have to go up to the board, explain information to the rest of the group, work in small groups and then share findings with whole group, etc. In other words…SI sessions should offer students unique opportunities that are logistically impossible in the regular class

What to do if Leader falters… What are some ways an SI Leader might struggle? Examples: not turning in weekly paperwork by deadlines, missing excessive number of sessions and/or class meetings, not focused while sitting in on class, receiving complaints from multiple students

Ways to help Leader Stay on Track All of this can be done during your weekly meeting. Communicate what you’re noticing Attempt to create an action plan to address issue Follow up to see how things are going Include me!

Never lose sight of the fact that… Your Leader is… BC’s cream of the crop but also still a work in progress Under a lot of pressure from own courses, SI responsibilities, sometimes another job, family issues, etc. Most likely, a future leader in society We can help them secure future employment by serving as references
