Studio Magic Lesson six - Optics

Expected Learning To be able to explain how the human eye works, and how glasses and contact lenses correct vision problems.

Key Words Myopia Hyperopia Lens Focus Retina

Yesterday I ignored my best friend. She looked so blurry I didn’t recognise her across the street. Why? What’s wrong with me? What can I do? discuss Engage

The optician says I am short-sighted. Light focuses in front of my retina. Engage

What does this mean? How does our eye normally work?

Short Sighted The medical name for short sightedness is – Myopia… How can this be fixed?

Task One: Inquiry Write down the meanings of Myopia and Hyperopia in your science books. Draw diagrams of how the use of glasses or contact lenses can fix these problems.

The Retina

Task two : Draw your retinal blood vessels Try the experiment shown at the end of the video. Draw a picture of what you can see n your science book… Did you know that the pattern of blood vessels at the back of the retina is as unique as a fingerprint! Only you have that pattern…

Test your knowledge True or false: Myopia is corrected with a Convex lens. Squid do not have a blind spot in their retina! Hyperopia is where the light is focused before it gets to the retina.
