20 May 2018 dennis@afmimpact.org COME HOLY SPIRIT PENTECOST Dennis Erasmus 20 May 2018 dennis@afmimpact.org https://theapologeticsgroup.com

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”  Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” ACTS 1:4-6 (GNT)

He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” ACTS 1:7-8 (GNT)

When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place.  Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. ACTS 2:1-2 (GNT)

Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there.  They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. ACTS 2:3-4 (GNT)

WAS IT ONLY FOR THE BELIEVERS IN THE UPPER ROOM?

Peter said to them, “Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit.  For God's promise was made to you and your children, and to all who are far away — ALL whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” ACTS 2:38-39 (GNT))

WAS THIS POWER JUST FOR THE PRIVILEGED FEW IN THE FIRST CENTURY?

MARK 16:15-16 (GNT) He said to them, “Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all people.  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.

MARK 16:17 (GNT) Believers will be given the power to perform miracles: they will drive out demons in my name; they will speak in strange tongues; …

JOHN16:14 (GNT) 14 He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you.

Is the speaking to God in tongues the first evidence of the power of the Holy Spirit working in you?

Acts 10:44-45 (GNT) The Jewish believers who had come from Joppa with Peter were amazed that God had poured out his gift of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speaking in strange tongues and praising God's greatness

It is experience rather than knowledge Knowledge comes through learning Experience comes through trust Open your spirit to the Holy Spirit Start speaking to God with your spirit rather than only with your mind Trust the Holy Spirit that you invited into your spirit

What is the difference between the gifts and the fruit of the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit give gifts and produce fruit in your live. The gifts are for work and the fruit are for character

"To have good fruit you must have a healthy tree; if you have a poor tree, you will have bad fruit. A tree is known by the kind of fruit it bears.” Mat 12:33 (GNT))

Afrikaans song on Gal 5:22: “Maar die vrug van die Gees is liefde, blydskap, vrede, lankmoedigheid, vriendelikheid, goedheid, getrouheid, sagmoedigheid selfbeheersing” Gal 5:22 (GNT))

But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control.  Gal 5:22-23a (GNT))

A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a poor tree cannot bear good fruit. And any tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire. Mat 7:18-19 (GNT))

“Remain united to me, and I will remain united to you “Remain united to me, and I will remain united to you. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself; it can do so only if it remains in the vine. In the same way you cannot bear fruit unless you remain in me.” Jesus said John 15:4 (GNT))

Pentecost is all about the indwelling Holy Spirit Do you want to open your spirit to the Holy Spirit and be filled? It is your opportunity to speak to God in tongues now
