Presentation transcript:

Introduction To Engineering Communication by Sketching and Isometric Pictorials - 1 Agenda Understand graphics as a communication tool Make a first 3-D and 2-D sketch This session briefly highlights materials in 1st Chapter of IGCE and starts on Chapter 2 – Isometric Sketching and Multi-view Drawings. Objectives: The students will learn why technical drawings effectively communicate technical ideas about designs and products Understand the various forms of projections Get introduced to Isometric Projections Sketching - 1

Reference Materials Introduction to Graphics Communication for Engineers (IGCE) by G. R. Bertoline 1st Chapter – Introduction to Graphics Communications 2nd Chapter – Sketching and Text (through Section 2.4.1 for today) Suggest students need to bring IGCE text to class for this series of lectures. Encourage students to stay up on reading. Reading ahead of class highly recommended. Hopefully class will reinforce the reading material and make more sense. Students should review again after class to make sure things are clear. Sketching - 1

Attempt in teams of two persons to describe the part below in words only. Write your description on a sheet of paper. Q: Would this be an effective way to tell someone how to build this part? This is an in-class interactive exercise. Allow students about 2 minutes to discuss with partner. Actually have students write a description of the object that would allow someone to build it Sketching - 1

Reasons for Technical Drawings Tools for Technical Drawing Chap 1 Topics to Note Reasons for Technical Drawings Tools for Technical Drawing Traditional Computer Based Alphabet of Lines Will not spend a lot of time on Chap 1, expect students to read and be familiar with material there. Reasons 3-D Sketches used to convey the general shape of the object you have in mind 2-D Sketches give details a machinist needs to build the object. Tools Traditional hand drawing or sketching, pencil or ink (used to be a profession in itself for those interested) Computer Aided Drawing (a large industry producing computer software they may have heard of in H.S: AutoCAD, ProEngineer, Solid Works) We will focus on traditional sketching for first part of this course and CAD for the second part Sketching - 1

Chap 2 Sketching and Text Types of Technical Drawings Advice on Freehand Sketching Introduction to Projections Just doing a brief overview of first two topics. They are expected to read material in Chapter 2 Sketching and Text to get more details. Will spend most of the time on Introduction to Projections in particular isometric projection. Sketching - 1

Three Basic Types of Technical Drawings Freehand sketches Instrument drawings Computer drawings and models See section 1.3 Technical Drawing tools and 2.1 Technical Sketching In this class we will focus primarily on Freehand Sketching and Computer Based drawing CAD programs have replaced much of instrument drawing process. Technical sketches are how engineers “think” and communicate with each other, using anything from a napkin session at lunch to formal computer based solid models and flow charts. Sketching - 1

Advice on Freehand Sketching Orient paper to be comfortable Mark end points of the lines to be sketched Relax and draw in direction comfortable to you Draw long lines as a series of short lines Use grid paper when available We will be doing a lot of freehand sketching. Students should not use straight edge, T-square, triangles or other tools. Do expect neat and clear work. THIS TAKES GOOD TECHNIQUE AND PRACTICE. 2.1.1 Freehand sketching tools and 2.2 Sketching Technique give excellent guidance. Slide summarizes some of the advice given in 2.1 Sketching - 1

Introduction of Projections: Our challenge is to present 3-D objects with 2-D media Two Basic Categories Multi-view Pictorial Definitions: Projection: the process or technique of reproducing a spatial (3-D) object upon a plane (2-D) surface Multi-view sketches present the object in a series of projections, each one showing only two of the object’s three dimensions. Pictorial or isometric sketches present the object in a single view with all three dimensions represented 1. Discuss the trade-offs in using any type of projection; some are more realistic, some are easier to draw, and some are easier to interpret by non-technical people 2. Have students sketch multiview and isometric drawings of object they described in Slide 3 Sketching - 1

Assignment A: First Sketch On a plain sheet of paper Sketch a multiview (front, top, & right side) drawing of the object in slide #3 Sketch an isometric drawing of the object in slide #3 TOP FRONT RIGHT SIDE Sketching - 1
