Terminology Communication Competence can be seen as the ability to communicate in personally effective and socially appropriate manner There are two levels to it: deeper level i.e everything we have to know in order to perform = Process Competence surface level i.e what can be seen = Performance Competence (Skills)
Communication Competence CULTURAL CONTEXT Process Competence – knowledge about communication Interpretive competence – knowing how to interpret what goes on around you Role competence – knowing how to meet or violate social expectations Self competence – knowing who you are and how to present yourself to others Goal competence – knowing how to achieve communication goals SITUATIONAL CONTEXT RELATIONAL CONTEXT Verbal Competence Using language effectively Non-verbal Using non-verbal codes effectively Listening Processing Messages Message competence – knowing how to send and receive message effectively Performative Competence – ability to enact communication HISTORICAL CONTEXT- CHANGE OVER TIME Source: Trenton, S & Jensen, A. 2013. What do you have to know or be able to do in order to communicate in a personally effective and socially appropriate manner ?
Process wise - you must Know how to interpret what goes on around them Set goals strategically Know who they are and how to present valued images of themselves to others Take on social roles appropriately Know how to send and receive intelligible messages And most importantly to be able to translate all of the above into action

Discussion about communication competence Self Competence – how can one develop his/her self competence. Give examples Interpretive Competence - name factors that may lead to incorrect / false interpretation of what goes on in a workplace Goal Competence - name different communication goals / objectives Verbal competence - name verbal skills that are used at work Non-verbal competence - name non-verbal skills that are used at work Role Competences – give examples of situations one could have a need to meet or violate social expectations and explain why
Why communicate? What’s your communication goal? sharing information getting information/feedback making statements, to have influence marketing building trust and commitment engaging getting noticed managing reputation building rapport
Summary Communication competence consists of many elements Individuals have different strengths and weaknesses Developing interpersonal communication skills includes both analyzing and performing (and studies indicate that is is good to start with analysis)

The best and the worst Find a pair Individually, first think about the best and worst communicator you ever knew Person One describes the chosen communicators to their partner Working together , come up with a list of at least 6 attributes that differentiate good and bad communication related to the examples Person Two describes the chosen persons to their partner and repeat step 4 Did you ideas differ? Analyzing interpersonal relationships by observing Knowing how to interpret what goes on around you one key area of communication competence. Find a group of people and observe them for about 10 minutes Make notes on what’s going on in their interactions Before 26 April Share your notes with a partner or group From your combined notes, make a list of all the things you were able to tell just by observing Create a small ”observation” guide – a list of things to look for in interactions Be prepared for discussion on 26 April
