RENEWABLE ENERGIES

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY THIS

WHAT WE MEAN BY THIS: Renewable energy, clean energy or green energy is ‘any naturally occurring, theoretically inexhaustible source of energy, as biomass, solar, wind, tidal, wave, and hydroelectric power, that is not derived from fossil or nuclear fuel’ This type of energy generation is completely environmentally friendly which does not create pollution or deplete any of the natural reserves of fossil fuel. What else can any of the fossil fuels be used for?

Usual Power Generation

WHY DO WE USE THESE / THE REASONS

WHY WE USE THESE / THE REASONS The main reason we use renewable energies is to drastically reduce carbon emissions to a point ideally of ZERO. Another major reason we use these is to preserve fossil fuels. Renewable energies also have the potential benefits of Being more economical longer term Improving the health of people Have an inexhaustible of supply Possess the potential to stabilise energy prices Make mankind more energy conserving conscious.

NAME SOME OF THE OLD / CURRENT ‘this is so last century!!’ Name these used methods…………………………. Why do we want to loose these / what is their environmental impact? Let move onto some of the newer 21st century methods 

WIND This form of renewable energy uses the kinetic energy from wind to turn the windmill blades which in rotate the turbine blades which results in electricity being generated and distributed across the national grid to homes all throughout the country (and even further!). This can be completely seen from this web page link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQpbTTGe_gk

RENEWABLE ENERGY BY WIND Some advantages: No fuel costs involved No harmful emission gases Some disadvantages: Noisy Unsightly

RENEWABLE ENERGY BY WIND http://192.241.188.121/w/wind-power-generation.html

SOLAR ENERGY - DEFINITION This is any energy generated via the sun as its source and can be achieved via utilising at in a few ways: This can occur directly from catching the suns rays, converting this to electricity and both directly transferring the power to homes, or by storing it up in batteries for future us. Another method is by using reflected and directed to one location so a tank of water can be heated by these concentred sun rays. The last of the three is where solar heating is achieved by passing water through solar panels on a roof in a sun seeking position, so the water for that home heated for both hot water and the ventral heating https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDZzAIcCQLQ

SOLAR ENERGY PROS AND CONS Advantages: Totally environmentally friendly Produces energy virtually free of charge Is quiet with no moving parts Disadvantages: Have a new major financial outlay Limited in day working time period Working efficacy can be reduced by pollution

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY This method uses the heat from within the depths of the planet earths’ crust. The water is effectively injected downward to the warmer parts of the ground ranging between 100m to up to 10 000m. Once the water reaches he hotter depths, it is then projected back up the surface as steam, which will drive the turbine to produce electricity. The advantages of this include is tremendous efficiency and it is renewable. Disadvantage include electricity is still required to move the water and the depth that may be involved in water movement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H1E-lXQpAs

Geothermal Energy

HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION This works by using the flow and power of water to drive around a type of turbine, that produces electricity and is provided to homes across the country. This can be done via using dammed water or the flow from a river. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnPEtwQtmGQ

HYDRO ELECTRIC PROS AND CONS Advantages: Electricity can be produced almost constantly The dam being utilised can last for decades This form of power generation does not produce pollution Disadvantages: High initial outlay in construction costs Residents of area in the valley of dam could lose their homes Can cause geological damage

Megawatts / Houses To bring this into some perspective: 1 MW of Solar Power will power 164 Homes 1 MW = 1 Million Watts

Q - ARE THERE ANY MORE ,METHODS???

A – YES THERE ARE!! Wave Power Biomass And some other wacky methods found here! http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-unbelievable-new-ways-generating- electricity/
