In indirect or reported questions,   1. The verb does not precede the subject, as in a direct question 2. Don’t use do/does/did in the second part; instead, use the main verb in the present simple or past simple form 3. If the indirect question is a yes/no question, use IF before the second part

1. The verb does not precede the subject Have you seen the president’s speech on TV? ↓ I wonder if you have seen the president’s speech on TV.

↓ 2. Don’t use do/does/did Where does he work? Can you tell me where * he works?

3. Use IF in yes/no questions Does he like sushi? ↓ Do you know if * he likes sushi?

Direct question: Where is the airport? Could you (possibly) tell me where the airport is? Do you (happen to) know where the airport is? I wonder if you could tell me where the airport is, please. Would you mind telling me where the airport is?

Direct question: Where does he live? Could you (possibly) tell me where he lives? Do you (happen to) know where he lives? I wonder if you could tell me where he lives, please. Would you mind telling me where he lives?

To make your questions sound more polite, begin like this: Excuse me,... Please,... I’m sorry to bother you, but...
