Welcome to Grade Five Curriculum Night Coming Attractions for your 5th grader

Curriculum Highlights for Parents Our Goals: to introduce ourselves to introduce the curriculum in each subject area to share our expectations to assist you in helping your child

Profile of a Fifth Grader “We teach the mind through the heart.” Social/Emotional growth spurts begin becoming better at solving social issues on their own increase in confidence will begin to do more gender mixing on their own Academic active, receptive learners becoming less concrete ready for new, more demanding skills learn well in cooperative groups hands-on learning still critical

Curriculum Frameworks & MCAS Grade Four results are due back in late September. What do they mean to us? What do they mean to you? Fifth Grade MCAS Dates: Spring 2016 Reading, Math, Science

Reading & Writing Workshop Model What It Looks Like Mini Lesson- teacher teaches a short lesson on a reading or writing skill to the whole group Independent Work - students practice the skill Conferences- Teachers confer with individual students on skills that meet the student’s needs Share- students share how they used the skill in their reading/writing that day How It Works Gives students chance to self-select writing topics, and the time to read “just right” books to practice strategies Provides time for one-on-one and small group teaching Students are taught skills that are appropriate for their state of reading/writing development Instruction is differentiated for all students

Mathematics Grade 5 Critical Areas: Common Core State Standards Standards of Standards of Math Content Math Practice . Importance is placed not only on skill acquisition, but on the application of those skills to real-world, messy problems. The Standards of Mathematical Practice describe the varieties of expertise that students should develop. They include making sense of problems, persevering, modeling with mathematics, and discerning patterns or structure within problems. Grade 5 Critical Areas: operations with fractions and decimals dividing with 2-digit divisors integrating understanding of decimal fractions into the place value system volume

Record observations and/or measurements to aid in testing solutions. Use data to evaluate and refine design solutions. Make and support arguments with evidence. Describe and graph quantities to address scientific questions. Obtain and combine information from books and/or other reliable media
