Cell Processes What do cells do? Cells bring in important substances and get rid of waste substances passive transport (diffusion or osmosis) or by active transport (using energy) Cell membrane controls movement Cells perform complex activities Photosynthesis (plants only) chloroplasts make food Cellular respiration (both plants and animals) mitochondria release energy from food Cells divide to make more cells Reproduction: Asexual reproduction – mitosis Sexual reproduction – meiosis Growth and repair: Mitosis in multicellular organisms
