Usage Mini-Lesson There, Their, They’re

Objective Students will use correct spelling of the homophones there, their, and they’re.

There Refers to a place. Hint: Remember the rhyme— “There tells where.” Hint: Remove the t, and you spell here. If you can replace there with here, use there. Where is my dog?

There Refers to a place. Hint: Remember the rhyme— “There tells where.” Hint: Remove the t, and you spell here. If you can replace there with here, use there. There he is!

Their Is a possessive pronoun indicating that the noun belongs to someone. Hint: Note the other pronouns you can find spelled in this word: He, I. This should remind you that their is also a pronoun. Hint: If you can replace it with another possessive pronoun, such as our or my, use their. Puppies often bark at their reflections.

They’re Is a contraction for they and are. You cannot use it to describe something. Instead, it is a subject (they) and verb (are). Hint: Spell out the contraction. If you can replace it with they are, use they’re. Look at the cats. They’re playing!

There, Their, They’re Please review the presentation as needed and then take the quiz to demonstrate mastery of this concept.
