Overview of the Prisma project PILOTING RRI IN INDUSTRY: A ROADMAP FOR TRANSFORMATIVE TECHNOLOGIES Smart-map Conference – Apr 23, 2018, Rome Overview of the Prisma project Andrea Porcari Italian Association for Industrial Research (Airi)

Agenda Project partners, goals, workflow The 8 RRI company pilots Process within the pilots Development of the roadmap (s) Highlights and remarks

PILOTING RRI IN INDUSTRY: A ROADMAP FOR TRANSFORMATIVE TECHNOLOGIES PRISMA (2016-2019) PILOTING RRI IN INDUSTRY: A ROADMAP FOR TRANSFORMATIVE TECHNOLOGIES

Main objectives of PRISMA Evidence on how RRI can improve the innovation process and its outcomes Integration of RRI in the R&I and the CSR policies of 8 companies active in the field of transformative technologies (pilots roadmaps) CSR/RRI Prisma exemplar roadmap, based on the 8 pilots roadmaps, that helps industries to implement RRI Transformative Technologies (TT): Transform production and change the relation of the company with users, suppliers and stakeholders. Contribute to a sustainable society and to competitiveness of Europe

Prisma workflow (Ago 2016- Jul 2019) WP1: Preparation WP2, 5: Pilots implementation WP3,4,5: cross- fertilization, assessment All WPs: exploitation & dissemination Analysis of RRI practices and tools, for TT and pilots Assessment (company, R&I project) 5 Stakeholder dialogues for cross-fertilization (TT & pilots) Database of RRI tools and case studies) Reflection RRI & CSR Roadmap Selection and measurement of RRI-KPI within pilots Experimentation Massive Online Open Course on RRI Analysis of costs & benefits of RRI Road-mapping Web, video, events, etc… Input Throughput Output The project is here

Objectives of the pilots Help the companies to: Embed RRI principles in specific R&I projects Make the business case for RRI Articulate a responsible strategy for their organization

RRI pilots in companies Technology Pilot companies Nanotechnology 2 Companies (Italy) Synthetic biology 3 Companies (Belgium, UK, US) Automated vehicles 2 Companies (UK, Netherlands) Internet of Things 1 Company (UK)

Prisma pilots: R&I project and (initial) RRI vision Colorobbia: Advanced medical therapies for highly effective and selecting treatment of cancer diseases Laboratori Archa: Safer and more effective dermo-cosmetics applications; More effectives patches for chronic lesions care Nanotech Evolva: Sustainable Production of synthetic agarwood products for improved health, wellness and nutrition Bisigodos: sustainable packaging, coatings and other products from waste algae biorefineries Syn bio HAT: IoT distributed data platform for increased personal control of data Spectro: IoT in cleaning, to improve public health and hygiene (and respects other relevant values) IoT RDM:Automated and personalized public transport vehicles to reduce traffic, pollution  and parking land use in urban areas Aerialtronics: drones, artificial intelligence and IoT solutions toward safe, regulatory compliant, and acceptable use of drones in cities Automated vehicles

RRI actions within the pilots Support ethical analysis, value scenarios to reflect on ELSA (ethical, legal, social aspects and impacts) of the R&I project Organize dialogues and co-creation initiatives on ELSA with stakeholders (partners, professional users, users and association of users, regulators, authorities, local communities.…) Advise on RRI and CSR tools, including social responsibility, sustainability, innovation management, safety tools and methods Awareness-raising and training initiatives for personnel on ethical and societal aspects of R&I Reflection and support on design for values (include values and social considerations in the design of R&I products) Embedded ethicists, mutual-learning platforms, cross-fertilization multi-stakeholder dialogues ….

PRISMA Exemplar Roadmap - Dimensions The exemplar roadmap will be based on individual roadmaps of the pilot companies

Design of the individual roadmaps 2. KEY ISSUES TO ADDRESS Identify key ethical, social impacts and expectations 3. WHERE WE WANT TO BE : Common understanding about RRI approaches, future societal and market needs 1. CREATE AN RRI VISION 4. HOW WE PLAN TO GET THERE Visionary strategy: aligning societal drivers, RRI approaches, technologies and product solutions in a time frame 6. TIMELINES Logical temporal sequences on a topic, e.g. RRI approaches, technologies 5. TOOLS AND METHODS Identify single strategic elements in the roadmap structure

Individual roadmaps template RRI approaches, tools, actions to ensure alignment of R&I products with societal needs R&I Technologies and products (and tech phases/ milestones to reach the market) Present/short term Drivers and bottlenecks to realize the R&I product in an «RRI» way (technical, ethical, social, economical) Medium term Long term Risk and Challenges to be addressed by the R&I project text text text text text text text RRI VISION text text text text text text text text Time to market of the R&I product

Highlights and remarks Building trust between the company and the Prisma partner (s) Understand the context, governance and decision-processes of the company Take information and data management seriously Propose actions with concrete impact (focused, feasible but also possibly ambitious) Work to introduce culture changes in the organization (RRI is first about culture!) Reflection, advice, learning process Commitment of the management (R&D, company level) Look for Return on investment, at least in the medium/long term (company /stakeholders) Technical, economical and ethical discussion often overlaps Need for tailored methods and approaches Existing RRI tools could inspire, but in most of the cases you need tailored solutions Stakeholder dialogues are really effective, but need to perfectly fit with the context Prisma motto: A creative learning process to explore paths to inspire responsible research and innovation in companies
