Understand Place Value Through Hundred Thousands Unit of Study: 5 Global Concept Guide: 2 of 5

Content Development Approximately 5 days should be spent on students representing numbers flexibly in more than one way to deepen their understanding of place value and the relationships between the places in the base-ten system. In the base-ten system, each place to the left is 10 times greater than the place to its right. Instruction should focus on helping students to choose the most efficient representation of a number to solve a given problem.

Day 1 The focus of day 1 is students will be representing 4 digit numbers in different ways. Examples: Number of Blocks Cubes Flats Rods Units 1,234 1 2 3 4 12 10 23

Day 2 and Day 3 The focus of Day 2 and Day 3 are for students to represent numbers using word form, expanded form, and standard form. Examples:

Day 4 The focus of Day 4 is for students to find patterns to solve real world text problems. The students extend their understanding of place value to 5- and 6-digit numbers. If students have a difficulty reading 6-digit numbers, have them put a sheet of paper to the right of the comma. Read the number like ay other 3-digit number and say thousand at the comma. Then read the rest of the number. Students should not be using the word “and” when reading a whole number. “And” is used when reading fractions and decimals.
