What did Justinian accomplish during his reign? (5) 527 – Justinian becomes ruler of the eastern empire VII: Laws – Set the foundation of law in Western Europe till today What did Justinian accomplish during his reign? (5) 1.Conquered new lands 2.Established center of trade, this brought economic prosperity. 3.His legal experts complete large body of civil laws – called “Justinian’s Code” Justinian appointed a commission in 528 A.D., consisting of ten persons, to make a new collection of imperial constitutions. The result was to gather together all Roman law into one code, known as the Justinian Code. The Justinian Code was divided into four parts: ( You do not need to know them) Institutes = textbook in law for students and lawyers. Digest = casebook covering many trials and decisions. Codex = collection of statutes and principles, and Novels = new laws. This legal code became the foundation of law in most western European countries. It was a compilation of early Roman laws and legal principles, illustrated by cases, and combined with an explanation of new laws and future legislation to be put into effect. http://www.canadianlawsite.com/JustinianCode.htm

Law With your partner: Look over some of the Justinian laws and compare them to American laws.

What was the problem in the church? The Catholic (west) and Orthodox (east) argued over the following issues Icons Who was in charge? Pope (west) vs. Emperor (east)

What is an Icon (Idol)? Statue of the Virgin Mary Religious images that can be prayed to. Statue of the Virgin Mary Jesus Christ on the cross They appear in several forms; in mural painting, mosaic and most typically painted on small wooded panels.

The fight over Icons Catholic (West) Orthodox (East) Thought that icons brought you closer to the idea/person Praying to a statue of Jesus brought you closer to him Orthodox (East) Thought it was wrong to worship something that was man- made. Worship should only be made to God.

So what’s the difference? The Great Schism In 1054 the Christian church split into 2 churches forever. In the West; the Roman Catholic (universal) Church. In the East; the Eastern Orthodox (correct belief) Church. So what’s the difference?

The West - Roman Catholic Church Mass was in Latin Pope was Supreme head of Church in the West - above any political ruler Priests could NOT marry Religious icons of martyrs and saints to be respected Only Pope and Bishops could interpret the scriptures.

The POPE is the leader of the WESTERN Roman Catholic Church.

The East- Orthodox Church “Mass” was in Greek - so everyone could understand. Monks who did missionary work often converted it into the language of the people they were trying to convert The Byzantine Emperor was superior to religious leader(patriarch) of Constantinople. Priests could marry Icons not allowed

The leader of the EASTERN Orthodox Church is the “PATRIARCH”.
