Bell Ringer! “ANNABEL LEE” QUIZ

Daily Objective TLW compare or contrast two texts in order to assess theme.

What is theme? What are ways authors build theme?

Claim, Cite Clarify You will be responding to the following prompt today in a C.C.C. : Compare/contrast the themes of “Annabel Lee” and “Masque of the Red Death.” This is a different type of C.C.C. It’s a longer version. I will show you how to do this with the following prompt: Compare/contrast the themes of “The Black Cat” and “Masque of the Red Death.”

The first thing I do… I brainstorm how they’re alike/different. I know I need to think about the theme of each text.

Theme of “The Black Cat” Your evil deeds will always haunt you.

Theme of “Masque of the Red Death” Your evil deeds will always haunt you…

I ask myself… WHAT do these themes have in common?

I make my claim! The claim is where I answer the question… In both “The Black Cat” and “Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allen Poe points out that evil deeds will always haunt those who commit them. Both the narrator of “The Black Cat” and Prince Prospero do heinous things that cause them to meet their fate. The claim is where I answer the question… The question asked me to compare/contrast the themes of both texts.

I ask myself… how do I back this claim up for “The Black Cat?”

I find evidence! In “The Black Cat,” the narrator murders his wife in a fit of rage. When the police arrive to investigate, he thinks he is safe until the cat he had meant to kill is heard behind the wall, “crying out its revenge” (Poe 2). What shows that the narrator of “The Black Cat” was haunted by his evil deeds? THE ENDING.

I ask myself… how does this support my claim?

I justify my evidence! This quote shows that the narrator was unable to escape his fate because the cat he intended to murder came back with a vengeance that led to his arrest. How does the ending show that he was haunted by his evil deeds?

Now I need to cite and clarify for MOTRD. So I Claim for both, cite for “The Black Cat” and Clarify for “The Black Cat…” Now I need to cite and clarify for MOTRD.

I find evidence! Similarly, Prince Prospero also attempted to avoid his fate. When his land was stricken with the plague, instead of trying to help his people, Poe writes, “he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light- hearted friends… and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys” (Poe 372). What shows that the narrator of “Masque of the Red Death” was haunted by his evil deeds? That locking himself in his castle did not save him.

I justify my evidence! Prince Prospero selfishly avoids his people to save himself but in the end, the Red Death finds him and everyone in the castle, including the prince, is killed. How does locking himself in the castle show that Prince Prospero was haunted by his evil deeds?

Now I need to put EVERYTHING together.

How do I bring this all back to the claim? How do these two relate? As one can see, these stories both show protagonists that attempt to escape their fates, but their evil deeds catch up to them and lead to their deaths.

So when I am doing a C.C.C. to compare/contrast 2 TEXTS, I have to cite and clarify for each text and then bring it all together at the end. It’s like… Claim Cite Clarify Bring it all together.

Your turn! Compare OR contrast the themes of “Masque of the Red Death” and “Annabel Lee.”
