What is Health Careers Education? Health Careers Education introduces students to a variety of careers and professional roles within healthcare, as well as gives students an opportunity to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, EKG Technician, Phlebotomist, and/or Patient Care Technician.

HCE Course Outline This course will cover: * Anatomy and Physiology * Diseases * Treatment of Diseases * Skills necessary for Patient Care * Hands-on Clinical Experience * EKG Skills * Phlebotomy Skills * Leadership Development

Certifications that can be Earned? Certified Nursing Assistant EKG Technician Phlebotomy Technician Patient Care Technician (Once CNA certification is earned)

Possible Credits Earned High School Credits: 2 College Credits: 6 (If students select dual enrollment)

Assignments - Classroom Grading will be based on the following categories: Medical Terminology Interactive Notebook Projects/Research Tests Vocabulary Quizzes Anatomy and Physiology Worksheets

Assignments – Clinical Grading will be based on the following categories: Skills Lab Clinical Rotations (Includes clinical hours, journals, evaluations, & competency checklists) Practice Lab Advanced Skills Lab (EKG & Phlebotomy) Community Service Practical Exam

Grading Scale In an effort to ensure our students are achieving at their highest potential and to better prepare our students for the state certification exams, our program uses an advanced proficiency grading scale. A= 100 – 93 B= 92 – 85 C= 84 – 78 D= 77 – 70 F= 69 – 0

Minimum Scores Students must maintain an average of 85% or higher in the class to qualify for the state certification exams. Students earning lower than a 78% average will participate in academic remediation. These guidelines will help ensure student success

Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend all classes. If a student is going to be absent or late, instructors must be notified. Maximum of three absences allowed per semester, or one for summer school.

Uniform and Supplies for Clinicals Uniform scrubs Name badge (provided) White or Black crew neck t-shirt (short or long-sleeved) Clean, athletic shoes, neutral colors Watch with a second hand Black ink pen Stethoscope (provided) Blood pressure cuff (provided) Gait Belt (provided) NO CELL PHONES OR SMART WATCHES WILL BE ALLOWED

Requirements for Clinicals (see handout) Proof of legal presence (Copy of AZ driver’s license or AZ State-issued ID Card) Copy of Social Security card Copy of Health Insurance card or letter stating that you do not have insurance coverage. Copy of American Heart Association CPR for Health Care Provider card and maintain current status throughout the program. Copy of Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card Negative drug screen (Students may be randomly selected to complete a drug screening any time during clinicals.) Physical examination - Students must maintain optimum health throughout the program. TB PPD/Chest X-ray – Tuberculin skin test within the past 12 months. MMR - Proof of rubella and rubeola immunity by positive antibody titers OR 2 doses of MMR Hep B - Evidence of the series of three hepatitis B vaccinations Tdap – Must have been done within the last 10 years. Varicella – Varicella immunity, by positive history of chicken poxs or proof of immunization. Flu Vaccination (ONLY during time required by hospital or healthcare facility) myClinical Exchange Account Access with completion of all forms and necessary training required by hospital or healthcare facility.

Lab ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY

Electrocardiography Phlebotomy Must attend ALL classes To receive program certificate of completion: - Must achieve 85% on all quizzes and tests - All Competency Checklists: Must be complete - Must complete 10 EKGs -1 Final Competency Skill Test: Must achieve 95% - May take the online Certification Exam Must attend ALL classes To receive program certificate of completion: - Must achieve 85% on all quizzes and tests - All Competency Checklists: Must be complete - Must complete 30 successful Phlebotomy sticks - Must complete 10 successful capillary punctures -1 Final Competency Skill Test: Must achieve 95% - May take the online Certification Exam
