What is a cell? Basic functioning unit in unicellular and multicellular organisms

Two types of Cells: Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells Both types of cells are surrounded by a cell membrane and contain DNA, or genetic material Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and membrane bound organelles Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles cell membrane nucleus organelles cytoplasm

Types of Eukaryotic Cells Animal Cells Plant Cells

Animal Cell No cell wall No chloroplasts No large central vacuole Centrioles present

Plant Cell Cell wall present Chloroplasts present Large central vacuole No centrioles

What is an organelle? Internal membrane bound structures contained in eukaryotic cells Specialized structures that perform important cellular functions

The Nucleus Function: Stores genetic information Contains DNA, chromatin, and the nucleolus. The nucleolus is the site of ribosome production Control center of the cell Structure: Double membrane Contains small openings Contains DNA in the form of chromosomes(DNA)
