The Gifts Within

4 Key Principles of The Family Virtues Guide The parent is the primary educator of the child. Children are born in potential. Their natural qualities can develop into positive or negative traits depending on how they are educated in the early years. Character develops as children learn to make responsible, moral choices. Self-esteem is a natural outcome of living by spiritual principles.

In Teachable Moments Stop Shaming Start Naming Virtues

“I saw the angel in the stone ~ and carved to set it free.” Michelangelo

What Destroys Conscience? Shaming Name-calling Beating or hitting Over-protecting Over-punishing Ignoring effort Lack of clear boundaries

What Builds Conscience? Naming virtues Clear boundaries The opportunity for reparation Acknowledging effort

Every Child Is Born In Potential

Boundaries Courtesy Respect Trust Assertiveness We will follow directions and treat each other as we would want to be treated. Respect We will listen to each other, fully present, without interrupting, rescuing, advising, comparing or teasing. Trust We will hold all personal information shared among us as private during and after this workshop. Assertiveness I will do what is right for me, participating in a way which is comfortable for me.

Assertiveness Respect Trust The A.R.T. Of Boundaries Do what is right for you Respect Be deeply present without advising interrupting rescuing criticizing teasing Trust Be worthy of trust. What we say here stays here.

Guidelines for Effective Family Ground Rules Be Moderate Have no more than 5 or 6 rules. Be Specific Fit them to your family. Be Positive Focus on virtues. Focus on Do’s rather than Don’ts. Establish specific, relevant consequences Let the “punishment” fit the “crime”. Make consequences Educative, not Punitive Give an opportunity to make reparation.

Guidelines for Effective Family Ground Rules Be Consistent Be trustworthy ~ keep your boundaries. Communicate Rules Clearly Use visuals. Humor helps. Make sure children understand the reasons when they receive consequences Ask “What was this consequence for?” Ground Rules are Non-Negotiable Make sure that you can live with the rules and then keep them. Be Flexible Revise the Ground Rules as ages and circumstances change.
