Percent 4 ways to Describe percent Words: 77 out of 100 squares are blue Fraction: 77/100 Decimal: 0.77 Percent: 77%

Percent Percent means “out of 100” so we need to convert 2/ 5 so it is equivalent to 100 2/ 5 x 20 = 40/100 40/100 = 0.40 0.40 x 100 = 40%

Percentage Discounts Percent

Percentage Discounts In a store, a Video Game that sells for $50 is marked "10% off." What is the discount? What is the sale price of the Game?

Percentage Discounts Stores often sell items for a discounted price. Typically, a store will discount an item by a percent of the original price. "10% off" refers to the rate of discount. Or what is 10% of 50?

Percentage Discounts Procedure to find the discount amount: Convert the percent to a decimal 10% = 0.10 Multiply the price by the decimal 0.10 x 50 = 5 $5 is the discount

Percentage Discounts Procedure to find the Discount/Sale Price: Subtract the discount amount from the original price $50 - $5 = $45 $45 is the discounted price / sale

Percentage Discounts In a grocery store, a $12 case of soda is labeled, "Get a 20% discount." What is the discount? What is the sale price of the case of soda?

Percentage Discounts Convert the percent to a decimal 20% = 0.20 Multiply the price by the decimal 0.20 x $12 = $2.40 Subtract the discount amount from the original price $12 - $2.40 = $9.60

Percentage Discounts The discount is $2.40 The sale price of the case of soda is $9.60
