Periodic Trends

Periodicity Repeating (periodic) patterns of physical and chemical properties among elements that define families with similar properties. The periodic table displays this repeating pattern, which is related to an atom’s outermost electrons. Explain the relationship of an elements position on the periodic table to its atomic number. Use the periodic table to identify the three classes of elements: metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Relate the position of an element on the periodic table to its electron configuration and compare its reactivity with other elements on the table. Identify trends on the periodic table (ionization energy, electronegativity, and relative size of atoms and ions.)

What is the primary method used to organize the periodic table? Warm up: What is the primary method used to organize the periodic table? DAY 1 Agenda: Work in pairs at a computer. Download and view the “classes of elements” powerpoint and view it as a slide show together and then answer the questions on the sheet provided. Download and view the “groups of elements” powerpoint and view it as a slide show together and then answer the questions on the sheet provided. 2. Color code the periodic table according to the directions provided and answer the questions on the “family ties” worksheet. 3. Honors: Experimental designs and bibliography's due in one week 10/13 and 10/14 Paperwork completion on 10/24 and 10/25 Must create a SEFOS account before meeting with Mrs. Riordan) Literature review rough draft due 10/28 and 10/31 OBJECTIVES : Recognize the three main classes of elements base on their position on the periodic table and identify specific families or groups with similar properties.
