By Demetri, Aidan, and Sean McC. Feminist Criticism By Demetri, Aidan, and Sean McC.

Definition Feminist criticism is a type of literary criticism focusing on the role of women in literature. Centering on the style in which the piece is written, and the way it relates to women

History Feminist criticism came about in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s following the women’s movement coming after WWII and has subsequently had a major effect on literature henceforth

Pros It evens out the literary playing field, so heavily dominated by men since the beginning of writing itself. New perspectives on stereotypes pertaining to mainly one gender, such as fighting for men and daintiness for women. Useful and often insightful ways of looking at history, culture, and society

Cons Like any biased theory, and it is extremely biased, when one way of explaining things becomes the preferred or sole way of doing so, neglecting other perspectives and approaches, the results are unbearably flat and one dimensional. When this way of criticizing is done it is often discredited quite easily by taking into account the refusal to view an issue a different way.

Poem Analysis What we saw in the poem as relates to Feminist Criticism was from one of the pros. This poor woman’s story would’ve never been shared with the same view without a woman writing it, in this case her daughter. She did not have a positive outlook on life, and she saw herself as going through a pointless life and thus decided to end it
