Introduction The fault in our stars A novel by john green Romantic teenage drama Character to be explored: Augustus waters – second main character Love interest to hazel grace John Green, Author of The Fault in Our Stars
Augustus Waters Fictionally Portrayed by Grant Gustin Second Main Character in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Symbol 1 : Grenade “I’m a Grenade, Okay? And at some point, I’m going to blow up. And I would like to minimize the casualties.” This grenade represents Augustus’ fragility. Augustus was diagnosed with Osteochondroma at a young age. Osteochondroma, is a benign tumor, which is Cancerous. Augustus had his leg amputated because of his tumor, and his Cancer was inactive for over a year. However, Augustus’ Cancer has an extreme rate to return.
Symbol 2: A Rollercoaster “And Augustus, how are you feeling” Patrick asked. “Me? Oh, I’m grand. I’m on a roller coaster that only goes up.” Augustus always looked on the bright side of living with his disease. He used dark humor and jokes to always keep the mood light. He was never a down to the main character, Hazel Grace. Hazel, also a Cancer patient, accepted her disease, but treated it with disgust and gloom. Although Augustus has his ups and downs through-out the book, just like a roller-coaster, he claims he’s ‘Only going up’.
Symbol 3: Stars “My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations” The third symbol I chose to associate with Augustus is the stars. He always says through-out the book that his thoughts are like stars. They are scattered around the place. Some are bright, some are dull, but they are all important and unique. However, he says it is impossible to put them into constellations, to be able to put them altogether to finally see the bigger picture. This is also where the title of the book comes from.
Symbol 4: Infinity “You’ve given me an infinity within numbered days” In the book, obviously, Hazel and Augustus fall in love. They are both battling their disease and it’s hard for them to be in love like they normally could have been. Instead they spend every day together like their last, because they never know when they might wake up one morning and the other could be gone. So, I chose this infinity sign to symbolize Augustus’ love for Hazel.
Symbol 5: Light at the End of a Tunnel “He lived 18 great years.” Isaac cried. “I’m 17.” Augustus interrupted, still a little choked up. “I’m assuming you have some time.” Isaac whispered. My final symbol for Augustus is a light at the end of the tunnel. The hope that Augustus showed through out the entire book demonstrates how he wanted to out beat his disease, and help Hazel beat hers as well. The light at the end of the tunnel represents the little shred of hope that Augustus always showed, even when he felt extremely down.
