How do you know if a Social Emotional Learning initiative would really make a difference? What is Social and Emotional Learning? A technical definition might be that “Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” Sometimes you will see SEL divided into distinct categories such as Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making Some say SEL should be a critical component of today’s educational process. And when we realize that recent data suggests that more than 50% of our students who are dropping out of school today are passing all of their classes, we intuitively know that our challenges in K-12 education today are not just about academics.
