Social Emotional Learning Partner Sponsor Introduction Presenter: Dennis Henegar

Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care SEL Initiatives give your teachers the opportunity to show how much they care Presenter: Dennis Henegar

How do you know if a Social Emotional Learning initiative would really make a difference? What is Social and Emotional Learning? A technical definition might be that “Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” Sometimes you will see SEL divided into distinct categories such as Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making Some say SEL should be a critical component of today’s educational process. And when we realize that recent data suggests that more than 50% of our students who are dropping out of school today are passing all of their classes, we intuitively know that our challenges in K-12 education today are not just about academics. Presenter: Dennis Henegar

Benefits of a successful SEL Initiative Behavior Improvement Healthier Students Happier Teachers Engaged Parents Positive School Culture And we often see and hear reports about the benefits of SEL – about how school culture has improved … how students feel better about themselves … and how teachers and parents can see the difference. But most if not all of that is anecdotal evidence. How do we really know? And how do we really know that we are being as successful as we could be or should be?

Real results Can it really make a difference? The Lamar experience

Key Components of a successful SEL Initiative Commitment Planning Leadership Accountability Commitment means making it a priority Planning means knowing up front what you are trying to accomplish, setting goals and objectives. This will help you know what to measure. SEL is still an emerging segment of the educational tapestry, one that is still being defined and refined. It is not something that all educators understand or know how to do. Leadership is critical – at the district and at the school level You have to know if the plan is being followed. Is everyone on board? Are they doing what they should be doing? How will you know?
