Science Curriculum Inquiry Standards Based Hands On Investigations Interdisciplinary Connections in Reading, Writing, Math & Social Studies Scientific Method Standards Based

Overall Goals Overall Goals: Science at P.S. 166 is an inquiry-based approach to standards based science education. Students work independently and in small groups as they discover the world around them. Students’ faces light up as they make new discoveries during “AHA!” moments using hands-on materials as well as reading, writing, math and Social Studies connections.

Scientific Method Students learn How to think Scientifically In every grade

Next Generation Science Units (k-2) Solids and Liquids Students will investigate temperature on different types of matter. Push Me, Pull Me Students will design projects related to motion. Our Environment Students will study the relationship between living things and where they live and the impact humans have on the environment. 1 Exploring Light and Solar Patterns Students will investigate patterns of daylight Light, Sound, and Waves Students will explore light and sound waves Structures and Behaviors in Living Things Students will explore heredity, and the structure and characteristics of living things. 2 Properties and Patterns of Water Students will describe and classify observable properties, and observe living things. The Changes To Land Over Time Students will focus on processes that change land over time- natural events. Plant and Animal Interactions Students will examine the relationships between organisms and the world around them.

KINDERGARTEN = YEAR LONG SUMMARY THEY WILL BEGIN TO ASSUME THE ROLE OF SCIENTIST IN A CLASSROOM SETTING. THEY BEGIN TO USE QUANTITATIVE (RELATING TO MEASURING, OR MEASURED BY THE QUANTITY RATHER THAN ITS QUALITY) OBSERVATIONS TO HELP THEM MAKE SENSE OF THEIR WORLD. THEY WILL GATHER AND APPLY DATA, DEVELOP SCIENTIFIC VOCABULARY AND DEVELOP EXPLANATIONS. THE WEATHER STUDY IS INTERWOVEN THROUGHOUT THE FOUR UNITS. STUDENTS COLLECT WEATHER DATA DAILY AND DESCRIBE WEATHER CONDITIONS.WEATHER IS THE FINAL UNIT AND STUDENTS USE DATA GATHERED TO IDENTIFY METHODS OF PREPARING FOR SEVERE WEATHER.

UNIT 1 - SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS ESSENTIAL QUESTION: HOW DOES TEMPERATURE AFFECT SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS? STUDENTS APPLY PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS REGARDING WATER AND OTHER SUBSTANCES. THEY LEARN TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES AND ARE INTRODUCED TO THE CONCEPT THAT MATTER HAS PROPERTIES. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATION: PLAN AND CONDUCT AN INVESTIGATION TO TEST THE CLAIM THAT MATTER CAN EXIST AS EITHER SOLID OR LIQUID, DEPENDING ON THE TEMPERATURE.

UNIT 2 - push me, pull me ESSENTIAL QUESTION: HOW DO PUSHES AND PULLS INFLUENCE THE WAY AN OBJECT MOVES? STUDENTS COMPARE THE EFFECTS OF PUSHES AND PULLS ON AN OBJECT AND LEARN HOW TO USE EVIDENCE TO DEVELOP EXPLANATIONS. THEY DRAW UPON LIFE EXPERIENCES LIKE BOUNCING A BALL, PLAYING WITH TOY CARS, AND GETTING UP AND DOWN FROM A CHAIR. THEY WILL DISCOVER HOW FORCES INFLUENCE THE SPEED/OR DIRECTION OF AN OBJECT, WHAT CAUSES AN OBJECT TO START AND STOP, AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OBJECTS COLLIDE. STEM RESOURCE - CREATE A CHAIN REACTION BY LAKESHORE.

UNIT 4 - OUR ENVIRONMENT ESSENTIAL QUESTION: WHAT DO LIVING THINGS NEED TO LIVE AND GROW, AND HOW MIGHT THEY CHANGE THEIR ENVIRONMENT TO SURVIVE? STUDENTS STUDY SYSTEMS IN THE NATURAL WORLD TO DISCOVER RELATIONSHIPS AMONG LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTS. THEY LOOK FOR PATTERNS AND ENGAGE IN ARGUMENT FROM EVIDENCE. REAL EXAMPLES OF LIVING THINGS INTERACTING WITH THEIR LOCAL ENVIRONMENTS - I.E. SQUIRREL DIGGING HOLES IN THE GROUND, PLANT ROOTS BREAKING THE GROUND, BEAVER BUILDING A DAM.

UNIT 4 -OUR ENVIRONMENT (CONT’D) STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW HUMANS IMPACT OUR ENVIRONMENT AND CONSIDER WAYS TO REDUCE NEGATIVE ALTERATIONS TO THE LAND, AIR, WATER, PLANTS AND ANIMALS. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: HOW DO PLANTS AND ANIMALS CHANGE THE ENVIRONMENT TO MEET THEIR NEEDS (URBAN/CITY BIRDS) SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE THE IMPACT OF HUMANS ON LIVING ORGANISMS. (SCHOOL WIDE INITIATIVE FOR RECYCLING)

UNIT 4 - OUR ENVIRONMENT (CONT’D) SUGGESTED GRADE INVESTIGATION: THE IMPACT HUMANS HAVE ON BUMBLE BEES AND THE ONSET OF THE COLLAPSING OF HIVES. THE IMPACT OF TOXINS, LEAD AND VETERINARY DRUGS ON VULTURES, WHO ARE ENDANGERED AND THE RESULTING RISE OF RABIES. *PERCY THE VICTORIOUS VULTURE

Next Generation Science Units (3-5) Inheritance and Variations - Students will explore life cycles, inherited traits and diversity among organisms Interdependence- Students will explore how organisms’ survival is dependent on how well-suited they are to their environment. Change Over Time- Students will learn how Earth systems, climate, and the environment affects populations of organisms over time. Interacting Forces Students will focus on physical sciences, where students apply their understanding to patterns and cause/ effect of force and emotions 4 Structure and Functions of Organisms Students will explore light energy and how structure and functions are related to how organisms process information from their senses. Transfer of Energy and Information Students will explore the different forms of energy (electrical, magnetic, heat, etc) and how each can be transferred through various forms matter. Energy, Motion and Collisions Both unit 2 and 3 build upon concepts of energy and information transfer by applying these ideas to physical science and mechanical systems. Impact of Natural Processes Students will investigate waves, weathering, and erosion and their impacts on Earth’s surface over a long period of time. 5 Physical and Chemical Changes Students will develop models of matter and provide evidence that matter is conserved when undergoes changes. Matter and Energy in Ecosystems Students will focus on cycles of matter and flow of energy in organisms and ecosystems. Earth Systems Science Students will describe and model how energy and matter interact in Earth systems, such as water cycle. Stars and the Solar System Students will expand the scale of the systems under study, as they investigate stars and the solar system.
