Mark 1-2 Humility in Action putting humility into practice

Practicing Humility – Self-Effacing Mark 1:24-25 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. Mark 1:37-38 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else Phil 2:3a Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit

Practicing Humility – Self-Effacing Mark 1:43-44 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” Mark 3:11-12 Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him. Phil 2:3a Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit

Practicing Humility – Valuing the Devalued Mark 2:15-17 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Phil 2:3b Rather, in humility value others above yourselves

Practicing Humility – Valuing the Devalued Mark 2:16-17 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Romans 12:16 Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Phil 2:3b Rather, in humility value others above yourselves

Practicing Humility – Unnecessary Demeaning Mark 1:3-4 ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins Mark 1:9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Phil 2:7 Rather, he made himself nothing
