Opening Prayer

Memory Work Small group leaders are invited to find a spot in the hallway to hear their small group’s memory work. Confirmands get two chances to successfully recite their memory work. Students should define the Lesson 2 Key Words when Memory Work is completed.

Today’s Lesson Intro. to the 10 Commandments Key Words: Commandments, Sin, & Law

Key Words COMMANDMENTS: things we must do because of the wisdom and love that’s behind them. (these aren’t merely suggestions!) SIN: anything that is against God; disobeying; “missing the mark.” LAW: rules to live by. There are 3 kinds of laws in the Old Testament: 1. moral – our duty toward God and others 2. ceremonial – religious rules 3. political – state rules for the Israelites. *Only the moral law was written on our hearts.

The 10 Commandments

1. You shall have no other gods before me. -false gods are real and alive today.

2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. -How is this commandment violated? Count how many times you hear God’s name used in vain this week in school, with your friends, on TV, etc…

3. Honor the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy. -What does this mean?

4. Honor your Father and Mother so that you may live long on the earth. -The only commandment with a promise attached.

-How does this commandment relate to other commandments? 5. You shall not kill. -How does this commandment relate to other commandments? -You can kill a person’s reputation, honor, and spirit.

6. You shall not commit adultery. -What is “adultery?”

7. You shall not steal. -Ownership – all things belong to God.

8. You shall not bear false witness.

9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. -Where were God’s people living when they received the Commandments? -Did they own a house?

10. You shall not covet anything else that is your neighbors…

Deut. 30:15-18 God is speaking to Moses and the Israelites God is giving them a choice between Life & prosperity OR Death & destruction “Love the Lord your God…” v. 16

Sin = Missing the Mark God’s Law

Fill-in-the-Blank “For all have SINNED and FALLEN short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23 “For whoever KEEPS the whole law and yet STUMBLES at just one point is guilty of breaking ALL of it,” James 2:10.

Small Catechism Open to the 10 Commandments (pg. 11). Read through the “What does this mean?” answers. Why do the answers begin with, “We should fear and love God…?”

The Greatest Commandments Matthew 22:37 – “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Summarizes Commandments 1-3 Matthew 22:39 – “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Summarizes Commandments 4-10
