Review Unit – A Global View: Regional Civilizations Spread of Civilizations in East Asia

Spread of Civilizations in East Asia Sui Dynasty Reunited China in the 500s Sui general Tang Taizong established Tang Dynasty. Two Golden Ages of China Tang Dynasty (618–907) Neighboring lands become tributary states. Bureaucracy restored/redistributed land. Song Dynasty (960–1279) Golden age of wealth and culture Farming and foreign trade expanded. Government and society Two main classes: gentry and peasants Government run by scholar-officials. Cultural achievements Prose and poetry flourished. Scholars produced works using calligraphy.

Spread of Civilizations in East Asia (cont.) The Mongol and Ming Empires Mongols invaded China and toppled the Song Dynasty in 1279. Ming Dynasty Exploration Chinese fleets went into distant waters. Zheng He explored as far as coast of East Africa. Korea and Its Traditions Absorbed Chinese traditions, but maintained its own Improved on Chinese inventions The Emergence of Japan Seas protected and isolated Japan. Yamato Dynasty sent nobles to study in China. Japan’s Feudal Age Emperor head of Japanese society, but shogun had the real power.
