War Between Athens and Sparta As Athens grew in wealthy, prestige, and power, bad will was strong between Sparta and Athens Leaders in Athens and Sparta pressed for war Each city thought they had an advantage 431 BCE, Sparta declares war on Athens 2

What were the advantages for both sides? Athens had stronger navy Sparta had stronger army Couldn’t be easily attacked by sea Sparta is inland Athens waited for opportune moment to attack at sea 3

How did the war end? Athens becomes victim to plague Both sides were weakened from constant fighting Sparta and Athens sign a truce 4
