Building Your Offense Around a Base Run and Pass Pat Chitwood St. Xavier High School Louisville, KY

Offensive Approach First downs win games. End every possession with a kick. Use multiple formations and backfield sets to run the same plays. Have a functional run/pass balance. Do what the team needs to win.

Having a Base Play Sets the tone for your offense. A play you will run “anywhere, any time.” Run from multiple formations. Gives you something to go to when things get crazy. Examples . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Base Play “Musts” Must be an expert at that play. Be able to solve problems with it Must be able to adjust the blocking scheme. Must be able to find formation advantages. Must be stubborn about running it. Must have complimentary plays when the defense “over-adjusts” to stop it.

Base Run - Sweep 2011 Sweep: Att.: 102 Yards: 654 Avg: 6.4 Efficiency: 59/102 Eff. %: 57.8%

Sweep in Recent History 2003 (12-3): Attempts: 123 Yards: 644 Per Carry: 5.2 Efficiency: 50.4%   2004 (14-1): Attempts: 146 Yards: 1,023 Per Carry: 7.1 Efficiency: 63% 2005 (14-1): Attempts: 125 Yards: 803 Per Carry: 6.4 Efficiency: 72% 2006 (9-3): Attempts: 105 Yards: 903 Per Carry: 8.6 Efficiency: 64.8%   2007 (14-1): Attempts: 144 Yards: 915 Per Carry: 6.4 Efficiency 60% 2008 (12-1): Attempts: 90 Yards: 592 Per Carry: 6.6 Efficiency: 64.4%

Sweep Blocking Rules Playside TE Drive 7, Reach 6,9. Playside Tackle Reach 4,5, LB. Block down if you are uncovered. Playside Guard Reach 2, 3, LB. Pull if you get a call from Tackle Center Over, Offside. Backside Guard Pull for backside LB. Backside Tackle Pull to the foot of the Center Playside RB (FB if in “I”) Sweep step, then aim for 1 yd. outside TE. Block #2 from sideline. Backside RB (TB if in “I”) Sweep step, stretch the defense, attack the 1st seam.

Sweep –vs- 4-4

Sweep –vs- 4-3

Sweep –vs- 3-3 Stack * TE blocks LB if the End is too wide to reach.

Base Pass – All-Stop Stop 2011 Att.: 37 Comp: 24 %: 64.9% Yards: 314 YPC: 13.1

“All-Stop” Advantages Simple route Rhythm throw for QB – doesn’t require a “big-arm” Easy pre-snap reads Deepest Corner Tightest Flat Defender Shortest Throw Good opportunity for YAC

“All-Stop” Coaching Points Must sell the “Go” route Must have proper spacing – Split Rules WR must turn outside after the catch QB must make a pre-snap read and throw to that side of the field QB must throw on proper timing

Pro Set – Middle of Field

2 x 2 w/ TE – Ball on Hash

Empty Set – Ball on Hash
