WHEN IS IT? Monday 18 – Friday 22 June 2018 Work Experience Week WHEN IS IT? Monday 18 – Friday 22 June 2018 A great opportunity to experience what it is like to work in an area that you are interested in.

Every student is responsible for arranging their own work placement. HOW TO ARRANGE A PLACEMENT Though family and friends who may be able to provide a suitable placement for you. Approach companies directly, especially if you have a clear idea of what you want to do. Use the database to browse possible work placements and then make contact with employers. Placements can be local or further afield e.g Exeter, Bristol or London BUT, make sure you can arrange and fund your travel and/or accommodation before you confirm a placement outside the area.

WHERE IS THE DATABASE HELD AND HOW DO I USE IT? http://ssp.learnaboutwork.net You have been issued with a PIN by your tutor. A letter has been sent home showing the PIN. If you haven’t got your PIN by early next week, come and see me.

Do not let employers down. WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU RING A POTENTIAL WORK PLACEMENT EMPLOYER Introduce yourself… ‘hello, my name is and I am a Year 10 student at Haygrove School in Bridgwater.’ Say why you are ringing… ’I understand you are offering a work experience placement as a [say job title here] and I am very interested in applying.’ LISTEN carefully to what the person says and answer any questions to the best of your ability. They may ask: Why are you interested in this placement? What do you enjoy most at school? Do you have any previous experience (part time job etc) Say thank you at the end of the call and immediately write down any instructions the employer has given you e.g. interview date or information to send in. If you are asked to go for an interview you MUST attend. Do not let employers down.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR PLACEMENT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED Complete bot the Placement Information sheet and the Parental Consent Form and return to the Careers team WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR PLACEMENT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED A form has been sent home this week, or you can get one from Careers (opposite Student Services) or from the school website.
