TASK: Define the memory keywords. CPU, RAM, Volatile, ROM, Firmware, Non-Volatile, BIOS, Disk Thrashing Memory TASK: Define the memory keywords.

Definitions Objectives CPU Central Processing Unit RAM BEGINNER: Discuss the two types of memory and why they are needed. ADVANCED: Explain the differences between RAM and ROM. EXPERT: Explain what happens if your computer doesn’t have enough memory. CPU Central Processing Unit RAM Random Access Memory Volatile Gets emptied when the power is turned off. ROM Read Only Memory Firmware Permanent software programmed into ROM. Starter activity Non-Volatile Doesn’t loose the data when the device is turned off. BIOS Basic input/output system contains programs to load the hardware. Disk Thrashing When a computer's virtual memory subsystem is in a constant state of paging.

True/False False True False False True True False True Objectives BEGINNER: Discuss the two types of memory and why they are needed. ADVANCED: Explain the differences between RAM and ROM. EXPERT: Explain what happens if your computer doesn’t have enough memory. RAM stands for Random Available Memory False RAM is volatile True ROM is part of the CPU False RAM is part of the hard disk False RAM stores your data and programs while you are working on them True Starter activity ROM contains the BIOS instructions True The operating system does not make use of RAM False Extra Ram can help improve the performance of your computer True

Extension Questions Objectives BEGINNER: Discuss the two types of memory and why they are needed. ADVANCED: Explain the differences between RAM and ROM. EXPERT: Explain what happens if your computer doesn’t have enough memory. 1. What is memory is and why would a computer system need this? 2. What is SRAM/DRAM 3. I love my new gaming computer! But it is running slowly… Can you help? Starter activity
