First Grade Parent Orientation Night Ms. Erhart, Mrs. Garcia, Mrs. Hernandez & Ms. Geiger

Growth Mindset * Mindset is a simple idea that makes all the difference * We promote a growth mindset by: - Emphasizing dedication and hard work - Modeling a love of learning - Encouraging parents to support us “I can’t do it….yet!”

Literacy Block Components Balanced Literacy Guided Reading Shared Reading Independent Reading Words Their Way—spelling and word patterns Students need to be reading 10-15 minutes Monday-Thursday and answering comprehension questions

Literacy Block Read to Self and Read to Someone Listen to Reading Word Work—spelling patterns and rules Work on Writing—grammar, editing, and revising

Writing Block * Teacher models writing process * Students write personal narratives of their choice as well as other genres such as expository, informational and how-tos * Teacher publishes student writing * Students share writing with their classmates

Competency Based Education (CBE Math) *CBE is a personalized approach that allows students to move through concepts when they demonstrate mastery. *Students will track their current learning goals as well as those they have already met. *This allows all students to have the appropriate time to master skills and objectives. *Quarter 1—review math concepts with a focus on vocabulary *Quarters 2-4—spiral through concepts as students work towards mastery

Math Block *Mini-Lesson *Teacher Time: small group/CGI time *Target Time: students work on individual learning goals *Grow Time: games and activities that cover previously taught concepts *Tech Time: tablet apps/computer websites based on individual learning goals

Social Studies/Science Integrated throughout our curriculum Study trips reinforce these concepts while exposing kids to real-life experiences Hands-on science activities STEM Fair: science projects plus math and technology booths and activities

Study Trips Red shirt and khaki pants Bring your lunch Parents must drive themselves (may not ride the bus) – siblings may not attend Will inform parents about upcoming trips and costs in newsletter Parents must have turned in a background check to chaperone

Student Birthdays * Let your child’s teacher know if you are planning on bringing cupcakes or cookies. No drinks or goody bags allowed. Check with your child’s teacher about class allergies. * Drop the treats off in the morning or bring them to school at 2:00 (sign in at front office) * Bring invitations for entire class if having a party outside of school.

Homework Reading: 10-15 minutes Monday-Thursday plus weekly comprehension questions Check red folders daily and read behavior calendar (Please look for special assignments and notes) Optional Monthly Homework Choice Board: students may complete activities to support in-class learning and to reinforce responsibility and time management
