Read the article and discuss the following questions… Paternity Testing Read the article and discuss the following questions…

Why might a mother want a paternity test? When can a paternity test be conducted? Why might a mother be reluctant to undergo a prenatal paternity test? Do you think one form of paternity testing is better than another? Why? Blood type testing, comparing the blood types of mother, father and child, used to be the primary form of paternity testing. Now DNA testing is considered the most reliable. Do you think paternity ruling based on blood typing is an acceptable basis for mandating child support? Justify your answer.

Who is the father of David Smith? Blood Typing Lab Who is the father of David Smith?

Fold a piece of paper into 4 sections Label each section with the names of the 4 people involved in the scenario: Jane Smith, John Smith, Wiley Smith & Baby David Smith Place a slide in each section

*One Smith at a time: 2. Place 1 drop of Anti-A serum in the “A” oval and 1 drop of Anti-B serum in the “B” oval 3. Place 1 drop of the person’s simulated blood on both Anti-sera 4. Mix each samples for 2 minutes using opposite sides of the toothpick *Do not contaminate!

5. Observe agglutination! If agglutination occurs in A only, the person has type A blood. If agglutination occurs in B only, the person has type B blood, if agglutination occurs in both A & B, then the individual has type AB blood, and if no agglutination occurs, the individual has type O blood. *Record Results on data table

1. Using a Punnett Square, list all of the possible genotypes of the children for Jane and John Smith. Show work!

2. Using a Punnett Square, list all of the possible genotypes of the children for Jane and Wiley Smith. Show work!
