Context World War One Shattered European Ideals on Progress and Humanity, thus disillusionment ensued On February 2 1916 in Zurich, Switzerland, Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings opened the Cabaret Voltaire Run by Artists, for Artists, all of equal standing who would dictate the events of the meeting By July, Ball created the Manifesto of Dadaism They were inspired by the absurdity and Childishness that the name represented This movement would spread to Paris, New York, Cologne, and Hanover, before the artists simply moved on by 1924, to other art movements.

Dadaism intended to revolt against What they Believed caused WWI Nationalism Bourgeois Culture Logic Authority Any currently held convention about art or reality

Characteristics Readymade objects are often times passed off as art Dada is irony,” “Dada is anti-art,” “Dada will kick you in the behind” is a self described characterization of this movement. Dada is mainly concerned with the uprooting traditional forms of art Thus they semi embraced modernity Readymade objects are often times passed off as art Unorthodoxy is the end all of this movement The collage and photomontage technique evolves during this movement. Overt mockery of marketing, by using advertisements as jests. Dada is multimedia, with poetry, plays, art, and sculpture, all encompassed in the movement. As a movement , its quite witty, with irony a main output in this movement.
