Creating a Commercial 60 second Film

Propaganda Techniques COMMERCIALS use propaganda techniques to persuade people to purchase their products/services. Glittering Generalities - Words of praise for product; nice words like goodness Name Calling - Trash talking another another product. Testimonial - A famous person recommends a product. Plain Folk - Appeals to regular people and their values such as health, family and patriotism Bandwagon - An appeal to be part of a group. Card Stacking - Manipulating information to make a product appear better than it is, often by unfair comparison or omitting facts.

Glittering Generalities Only showing the positive about a product, not giving any facts.

Name Calling Trash talking another product. Making your product look better by tearing apart your competitor product.

Testimonial Famous person endorses a product.

Plain Folk Using regular people to sell you a product. Appealing to the consumers understanding and need of the product.

Bandwagon An appeal to be part of a group.

Card Stacking Manipulating information to make a product appear better than it is, often by unfair comparison or omitting facts

Commercials Super Bowl is where commercials show their best propaganda techniques. With table partners - come up with 2 commercials that fit in each category of propaganda techniques. How can commercials be like 1 minute films. Let’s ask Darius. Mentos commercials Doritos Swing Commercial

Assignment Create a short 30-60 second film, but using a commercial propaganda technique to sell a product. Find a product you would like to sell. (Mentos, Doritos, etc.) Create a protagonist, hero. Have your protagonist be put in a situation where they have to solve their problem quickly. Write a treatment form with a clear beginning, middle and end. Must be solved in less than 60 seconds. Show your product.

Commerical - Day 1 PRE-PRODUCTION: After creating an individual treatment form share your idea with your other group members. Choose one idea you would like to do. Or you can create a new one as a group. Create a GROUP treatment form. Pitch idea to teacher. Then create a GROUP STORYBOARD. Everyone must draw on the storyboard. (Initial storyboard you created.)

Let’s Get Started - Day 2 PRODUCTION Film entire Commercial When filming remember to film from a variety of angles. Keep camera steady. Watch continuity.

Let’s Get Started - Day 3 POST PRODUCTION Start editing your PSA (Don’t forget to start a new folder on desktop and eject SD card after importing clips.) When finished from first edit, get 3 Peer Reviews of your Project. Export project (H.264, Vimeo 720) Upload to Google Classroom Complete a Peer Evaluation of Group Members
