“The Office of the Pastor” (Part 3) I Timothy 3:1-7 Qualities of Godly Leaders

1 Timothy 3:1-7 1  This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2  A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3  not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4  one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence

1 Timothy 3:1-7 5  (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6  not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7  Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

The Truth of the Inner Life: PERSONAL STABILITY: Temperate – “wineless”, well balanced. Sober-minded – Prudent, respectable and orderly life; Hospitable – “to love strangers”, (Rom 12:13; Heb 13:2 I Peter 4:9) Able to teach- (Relates to his giftedness and calling)

The Truth of the Inner Life: PERSONAL INTEGRITY: Not given to wine- not addicted to wine; Not violent- not reacting in a violent manner; Not greedy for money- Guarding against covetousness; (I Thes 2:5; I Pet 5:2; 2 Pt 2:1-3) Not Quarrelsome- I Tim 6:4 Not covetous- not desiring other possessions

The Truth of the Inner Life: PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY: One Who rules his own house well – the link between family and church. Not a novice: (not a new convert);

Life Step “Everything rises and falls on leadership” Pastors to lead in their personal and pulpit life. Deacons must follow the same guidelines. People to pass on solid Christian living to the congregation.
