Who should control Jerusalem? World Geography Who should control Jerusalem?

Jerusalem – Arabs vs. Jews Conflict between Jews & Arabs over land & statehood in Southwest Asia disrupts life in the region One aspect of the conflict centers around Jerusalem

Jerusalem – Arabs vs. Jews The city is sacred to Jews, Christians, & Muslims Control of Jerusalem is a deeply emotional issue that affects the region’s politics & Population

After World War II The United Nations proposed that Jerusalem should become an international city under the control of a international body BUT…

At the End of the Arab-Israeli War in 1948… Jerusalem has divided Arabs & Israelis. Palestine (Arabs) and Israel (Jews)

1967 – 6 Day War During a 6 day war in 1967 Israelis took control of most of the city of Jerusalem Palestine and Israel still feud over the land today. Both Palestine and Israel claim Jerusalem as the capital of their nation.

Palestinian Control Parts of the city are still controlled by Palestinians The Haramash- Sharif, aka Temple Mount

UN Resolution 194 Many Palestinians were forced to leave settlement lands UN Resolution 194 states that Palestinians should have the “right of return” to former homelands But… Israel fears that the sheer # of returning Palestinians would overwhelm Israel.

Why??? The control of Jerusalem is a difficult diplomatic problem to solve because it is BOTH an emotional & a political issue.
