Translating Verbal Expressions and Equations Key Words and Phrases
How can we translate verbal expressions and equations? Explain the following terms: Translate: Verbal: Expressions: Equations: Try to elicit the definitions from the students. Sometimes I pair the students and ask them to come up with a definition for each word. Allow 5 minutes and then share some of the pairs definitions or explanations. Write on the board the definitions for each trying to use their words.
Powers Key Words and Phrases The square of, squared The cube of, or cubed I usually create a flip book for this power point for students to take notes that looks like chart. You could also print slides for note taking. The first section is the key word section, they are all filled in for each chart. The rest of the sections will be filled in while teaching the lesson. Ask students to come up with the phrases and then the algebraic expression or equation. The second section is for the phrase, example: The square of a number. The third section is for the algebraic translation: y2. Complete for all slides.

Your Results At the end of the lesson I hand out to each student one or two key words or phrase printed on card stock with magnet on the back. I then label each section addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, powers, and equals. I then ask the student with key words or phrases for addition to come an place their card on the board and continue the same way for the rest. Have students check for any errors and pull out the turn around words ( more than, less than, added to, and subtracted from)
