Tessellations A pattern made of identical shapes: * the shapes must fit together without any gaps * the shapes should not overlap Example: This tessellation is made with squares and octagons.

M.C. Escher 1898 - 1972

M.C. Escher Born June 17, 1898 – Died March 27, 1972 His name is Maurits Cornelis Escher, but he is generally referred to as M.C. Escher. He was a Dutch graphic artist, and was known for his mathematical works. He excelled at drawing, but was a poor student, and failed out of a number of schools, including an Architecture school. Spent his entire life in Europe Married a woman named Jetta in 1924, and they had one son, Giorgio.

M.C. Escher He is known for his mathematical works, and worked mostly in lithographs and woodcuts (carvings). Many of these works are tessellations, or pictures within pictures. He distorted perception and perspective, and frequently appeared to break the rules of geometry.
