Matt. 21:1-22

Isaiah 11:3-4 “3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD Isaiah 11:3-4 “3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.”

Zechariah 9:9 “9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion Zechariah 9:9 “9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

Judges 5:10, 2 Sam 16:2, 1 Kings 1:38

Gen. 49:10-11 “10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. 11 Binding his foal to the vine and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine, he has washed his garments in wine and his vesture in the blood of grapes.”

Zechariah 9:8 “But I will encamp at my temple to guard it against marauding forces. Never again will an oppressor overrun my people, for now I am keeping watch.”

He’s Humble on donkey, But Don’t mess with His temple!

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 “16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.” 2 Corinthians 6:16 “16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God…”

“My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.” (Isaiah 56:7, Jeremiah 7:11)

Bethphage - “House of unripe figs” Bethany - “House of figs”

Fig’s represent a nation’s wealth and prosperity Fig’s represent a nation’s wealth and prosperity. (Isaiah 28:4; Hosea 9:10; Psalm 105:33; Jeremiah 8:13; Micah 7:1-6)

Wilkins “Jesus’ cursing the fig tree is not a fit of temper but a symbolic act, demonstrating that God’s creatures produce that for which they were created – to carry out God’s will, which means entering into a discipleship relationship with him and then demonstrating fruit from that relationship in a life of faith empowered by prayer.”

James Montgomery Boice “This is also what will happen to every merely outward church, any gathering of people who show the green leaves of apparent spiritual prosperity but who fail to possess the fruit of the Spirit…. Nothing is so obvious as the truth that religious words without spiritual fruit are worthless.“

John 15:5-6 “I am the vine; you are the branches John 15:5-6 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.”

Jonah 4:9-11 “9 But God said to Jonah, “Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?” 10 But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?””

Francis Chan “Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding in life in things that don’t really matter.”
