Presentation transcript:

Teaching with Love and Logic Taking Control of the Classroom how to have fun teaching and end each day energized

Teaching with Love and Logic no more power struggles

Teaching with Love and Logic Principles of successful human interactions: Share the control Share the thinking Balance consequences with empathy Maintain self-concept

Teaching with Love and Logic Three basic rules: Use enforceable limits Provide choices within limits Apply consequences with empathy

Teaching with Love and Logic Use enforceable limits Effective application of limits requires that children Have implied choices Are forced into the thinking mode PAPERS TO BE GRADED NEXT SUMMER PAPERS TO BE GRADED TONIGHT

Teaching with Love and Logic Turn your garbage into gold Garbage Gold Don’t talk to me in that tone I’ll be glad to listen when your of voice! voice sounds like mine. Raise your hand if you want I’m sure you’re anxious to talk to talk to me. and I listen to people who raise their hands. Open your books to page 54. I’ll be working from page 54. Turn your paper in on time I give full credit for papers or you’ll get a lower grade. turned in on time.

Teaching with Love and Logic Provide choices within limits I either give the other person control on my terms or s/he will take it on her/his terms. All choices offered should make you deliriously happy: This assignment needs to be completed this week. Would you rather make the deadline Thursday or Friday? It’s up to you.

Teaching with Love and Logic Very few people find it easy to think of choices when they are upset. Rules for giving choices: Select only choices you like Only give choices you are willing to allow the child to experience the consequences of Never give choices when the child is in danger Never give choices unless you’re willing to make the choice for the child if they don’t within 10 seconds

Teaching with Love and Logic The time to offer choices is when you are happy and everything is going smoothly The Savings Account Approach Offer as many choices as possible when there are no problems, creating a savings account of control, using phrases like “you decide”, “that’s your choice” When control is shared in a healthy way by the teacher, there is no need for students to fight for control Enables teacher to take withdrawals from the account when necessary: “Thanks for understanding that I need to decide this time”

Teaching with Love and Logic Apply consequences with empathy Children learn from their mistakes when They experience the consequences of their mistakes Adults in their environment provide empathy If adults reprimand them, children may transform sorrow over their choice into anger with the adult. If adults express sorrow, children have a significant learning opportunity. CONSEQUENCES + EMPATHY = LEARNING

Teaching with Love and Logic A mistake can be a great teacher, provided the child is allowed to experience the consequences of the mistake. However, it is the empathy expressed by the adult that drives the pain of the consequence into his or her heart and turns experience into long-term memory and wisdom.
