New York Times What’s happening: Yulia passing a radiation- metering checkpoint at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant Write about how you react to this picture now that you know what is going on.

Maniac Magee Ch. 9&10 With a partner, read chapter 9 and try to figure out what this simile from the end of the chapter means: “The Cobras were laughing because they figured the dumb, scraggly runt would get out of the East End in about as good shape as a bare big toe in a convention of snapping turtles.” As a class, we will read chapter 10. After reading chapter 10, we will make a T-chart to figure out: What made Mars Bar think he was “bad”? Why did the lady win the glare contest?

Maniac Magee We will go over answers for chapters 14&15 As a class we will begin reading chapters 16-21 As we read, be sure to complete the comprehension questions. After each chapter, we will pause to complete a quickwrite. Put all of them on the same page.

Quickwrites Chapter 16 “But there it was, piling up around him: dislike. Not from everybody. But enough. And Maniac couldn’t see it. And then all of a sudden, he could.” Explain what Maniac is seeing at the end of this chapter. Cite your evidence from the book. Chapter 17 How do experiences of prejudice affect Maniac? Chapter 18 What was the purpose of the argument between Amanda and Maniac? Chapter 20 (none for 19) What does this quote mean? “He would need the touch of a surgeon, the alertness of an owl, the cunning of three foxes, and the foresight of a grand master in chess.” Chapter 21 Why did Maniac walk – not run – out of town?
