EV charging – a grid perspective Anda Baumerte Sustainability Manager PUBLIC – The EV Roadshow, Durham, 15 October 2018

Northern Powergrid Who we are: Ofgem regulated ‘wires-only’ electricity distributor 95,000km of overhead lines 9,650 sq. miles of underground cables 63,000 substations Who we serve: 3.9 million homes & businesses – a population of 8 million 2,900 employees 3 of the UK’s 10 biggest cities, 4 national parks and 5 AONB £85 of typical annual domestic bill (23p per day) Northeast Yorkshire PUBLIC – The EV Roadshow, Durham, 15 October 2018

Customer-led changes to energy use Driven by decentralisation and decarbonisation Customers with more flexible distributed assets – generation and electrification of transport and heat New markets for customers to access PUBLIC – The EV Roadshow, Durham, 15 October 2018

Driving electric: challenges & opportunities Electric vehicles (EVs) offer an opportunity to sequester renewable generation and reduce air pollution in cities, however.. ..electrifying heat and transport to meet the 2050 decarbonisation target could change the current peak demand on the networks: An EV electricity demand is of the same order of magnitude as an average UK household A huge uncertainty exists in EV and charging point growth projections If charged at a time of relatively low demand (e.g. overnight), the impact may be minimal We are in process of gradually introducing EVs into our fleet, installing EV charging infrastructure on our sites, and running a number of trials of bi-directional charging. PUBLIC – The EV Roadshow, Durham, 15 October 2018

What we are doing now Improving our forecasting capability. Rolling out low voltage monitoring at substations. Facilitating smart metering rollout. Platform for future network flexibility solutions - £83m smart grid enablers programme. Updating our design policies as new information arises. National level activity: Electricity Networks Association (ENA) Open Networks project; ENA Low Carbon Technology group – notification processes, knowledge sharing; Ofgem’s Network charging reform. Innovation projects to explore the opportunities of EVs PUBLIC – The EV Roadshow, Durham, 15 October 2018

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) Bi-directional charging could enabled by vehicle-to-grid technology – a game-changer? Battery on wheels: an EV becomes a dispatchable, mobile source of electricity Potential for customers to use the batteries in their vehicles as a means to: Balance their domestic or commercial load Supply partially connected (reduced capacity post fault) systems or microgrids Earn revenue from exporting electricity back to the grid. We have started early trials to explore the customer use, technical standards and barriers to the adoption of V2G technology. PUBLIC – The EV Roadshow, Durham, 15 October 2018 Consumer use of the smart functions DSR management opportunities offered by the EVs Design assessment process and associated design guidance for V2G connections Guidance on where and how V2G may be used to mitigate network issues

Silent Power to restore electricity supply Electric hybrid vans designed to temporarily restore supplies to a few houses in a quiet, reliable and efficient manner: Each van carries a 30kWh/40kVA battery with a top-up generator Addresses concerns over noise and air pollution Provides a greater efficiency than a generator A straightforward deployment PUBLIC – The EV Roadshow, Durham, 15 October 2018

Giving EV battery a second life - Resilient Homes Re-purposed EV battery provision for vulnerable customers reliant on electrically powered medical equipment. A customer-focussed solution to temporary disconnections. PUBLIC – The EV Roadshow, Durham, 15 October 2018
