Presentation transcript:

The purpose of this movie poster was to promote the film ‘Private Buckaroo’ in 1942. Private Buckaroo was a musical based film and featured acts such as Harry James and The Andrew Sister, both of which were quite well known in the early 40’s. The culture present and prominent at the time would have greatly affected the design and layout of this poster, forcing it to come across styled as swing like and ritzy. Using a variety of text and media techniques such as, type, photography, sketching, cropping, print and collage, the artist is able to represent the fun, vibrant, swing filled movie in the most appropriate way. The poster exposes elements such as vibrant colour (to represent the fun side of the era), line (within the background), shape (each image and the tiny stars placed throughout the background), tone and texture, as well as principles including balance (among text), figure ground (the foreground imagery against the background) and contrast. The media method for these posters would have been mass printed on paper material, using a press, and then transported accordingly.

This poster was thrown together as a collage of different notes and imagery, then photocopied. The piece could easily be influenced by the methods of Dada. The purpose of this poster was to advertise and promote a local punk rock show, featuring The Casualties, The Unseen, Banner of Hope, Disorderly Conduct and The Krays. The culture this poster was styled around was very makeshift and DIY based, therefore this poster is likely printed black and white for it was either cheaper or free… possibly without permission... This was likely printed in the 1980’s and pasted across poles, walls and store windows throughout New York City. Contrast is extremely prominent, as a principle within this piece simply because of the different grayscale shades and hierarchy within the text placement. Element wise, texture would be a very dominant feature being that the poster appears creased and torn due to the collaging techniques. Line also plays a huge part within this poster as, text, imagery and throughout the photography.

The purpose of this alternative, modern piece is to promote the 2012 North American La Dispute – Wildlife Tour. The poster features the three supporting acts, Balance and Composure, All Get Out and Sainthood Reps, and also sports one part of the La Dispute logo (The arrow piece). The poster has been made up using the method of merging photography and digital techniques. The background photograph creates a soothing backdrop for the white text and imagery, creating the principle of figure-ground. The whole design of the poster is quite simplistic and subtle. Contrast is extremely important for this piece for it allows you to actually read the text. The element of line is obviously present, along side shape at the foreground whilst form becomes strongly visible in the background, accompanied by texture and colour, among the shrubbery. This poster would have been put together via an editing software such as Photoshop and then printed on either gloss paper or card. The culture surrounding this piece is best summed up as the modern era, alternative, emotional/hardcore scene, the idea of being yourself, even if that means different.

Donnie Darko was released in 2001 and this ghoulish looking poster belongs to said movie. Photography is extremely prominent within this piece. Frank (the rabbit) the main centre of focus, pictures of the cast scattered throughout the area of his face, creating form and texture. The Black background and limited colourings creates uncertainty, causing the audience to realise the film will likely be of a darker style, e.g. horror, thriller. The dull blue gives off a strange, false sense of comfort. The title text blurs out horizontally, creating lines and depth. This piece would likely have been created on a digital editing software and printed on large scale, gloss paper.
