Smarter mobility - could you do it? 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Why don’t you? The obstacles preventing smart mobility Valpastin Oy 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Cycling or public transport is not possible for me, because… …it’s too far to cycle or walk …the bus stop/train station is too far …I have to take my kids to day care …I have so much to carry …I have to wear a suit at work …I need the car at work …I am too tired to cycle after work …it’s too cold/wet/slippery to cycle or walk …I have to give my wife a lift 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Overcoming the obstacles Change of attitude: commuting is my personal recreation time! KKI-ohjelma/ Studio Valoisa Nauris Valpastin Oy Valpastin Oy Valpastin Oy 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Smart mobility trial periods – making people change their ways Persuade potential people to try the alternative behaviour. Offer incentives, e.g. new experience: electric or folding bicycle free bicycle repair fitting of studded bike tyres free tickets for public transport etc. Mirella Mellonmaa, HSL 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Smart mobility trials: practicalities Valpastin Oy 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Practicalities: selecting suitable participants Motorists with good possibilities and motivation for using smarter modes of travel. I don’t have a Travel Card, I have always just bought single tickets. Already getting the Travel Card would be a big step for me! I would like to try out an electrical bike as using a normal bike the travel takes too long considering I need to take a shower in the office after getting to work. 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Practicalities: length and timing of the trial Length: 2 to 3 weeks Low threshold to take part Enough to shed prejudices Enough for new routines to start forming Timing During ordinary conditions Avoid summer timetables and low traffic periods Hanna Hannula 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Practicalities: spreading the word Participants are asked to write short reports during the trial period Posts in the projects’ blogs Participants are encouraged to spread their experiences Social media Friends and family Coffee break small talk 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Practicalities: celebrate and reward! Mirella Mellonmaa, HSL 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

About 100 trial participants… Valpastin Oy About 100 trial participants… KKI-ohjelma/ Studio Valoisa Nauris Valpastin Oy Valpastin Oy Valpastin Oy 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

…in different parts of Finland Kokkola Kangasala Jyväskylä Hyvinkää Helsinki region 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

Effectiveness The effectiveness of the trials can be estimated by interviewing the participants checking the usage of the participants’ Travel Cards repeating the commuting survey The effectiveness of trial periods in four workplaces in the Helsinki region in 2016 (N=19) The trial clearly changed choice of transport 4 The trials had some influence on choice of transport 10 The trial influenced attitudes but not practices 5 The trial had no influence 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

”Thank you that you inspired me to do this!” ”The amount of incidental activity was multiplied.” ”All in all the journey took as long by bike as by car.” Aleksi Luukkanen ”One advantage about using public transport is the possibility to read.” Johanna Mäki 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough

”I might get hooked to this!” ”When cycling to work I stopped by the lake to admire the still water. If I had been driving my car, it would never have crossed my mind.” ”The weather was wonderful and the route downright beautiful.” Laura-Maria Vilppo Heidi Vuorenvirta Liisa Suurla 16.11.2018 Sally Londesborough
