Taxonomy & Classification p. 117 EQ: How are organisms classified? How do we know which organisms are most related using the scientific name?

What do you call this Bug?? Armadillo Bug Doodle Bug Wood Bug Piggy-Wigs (Australians) Boat Builder (Canadians) Cheeselogs (British) Sow Bug Wood Louse Roly-poly Cheesy Bobs (British) Slaters (Australians) Pill Bug

What Scientists call this Bug Oniscus asellus Fun Fact!! This organism is not an insect, but a crustacean. It is more closely related to crabs & shrimps than insects.

Linnaeus Started it All Before Linneaus, there was no standard for naming organisms – CHAOS! Linneaus (1700s) organized animals based on physical similarities We know that physical similarities don’t always mean they are related …What type of structure is this?? Now we classify animals based on their genetic similarities

Important Vocabulary: Taxonomy - science of naming and classifying organisms Taxon – group of organisms (ex: order, class) that are similar Binomial nomenclature – two word system for naming organisms. Genus species if you are typing it Genus species if you are writing by hand Species – Group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring

Levels of Classification Broadest Dear King Philip Came Over For Great Spaghetti Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus species King Phillip Most Specific

Are squirrels more closely related to panda bears or cardinals? Explain.

Which organisms are most similar? Group 1 Ursus americanus Homarus americanus Bufo americanus Group 2 Ursus americanus Ursus arctos Ursus maritimus
