Warm I can identify what Chanukah is and describe the story of its origins. I can explain how Jews celebrate and the symbolism of Chanukah. Chanukah is a Jewish festival that lasts for 8 days. What is Chanukah? Chanukah is a Jewish festival that lasts for 8 days. We find the story in Maccabee’s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VfChLAADS8

The Story Chanukah remembers the story of the Maccabees and how they fought to regain the temple. They needed oil to relight the Ner Tamid but only had enough for one day…miraculously it lasted for 8 and until they could get new oil. The Ner Tamid is an eternal light which hangs in the synagogue and should never go out. Once it was an oil lamp but nowadays it tends to be run on electricity.

What food is eaten during Chanukah? Chanukah is a great time for eating delicious foods. Some dishes have special significance, such as latkes (a kind of potato fritter), pancakes and doughnuts. This is because they are fried in oil and so Jewish people remember the miracle of the oil lasting eight days in the temple.
