Conventions, Writing and Research A modifier is a word or a group of words that give more information about the word it modifies. The blue house on the corner is for sale this weekend. Which house? Where is the house? When? Usually these modifiers are near the word they modify—but if they aren’t—they are considered Dangling or Misplaced.

Conventions, Writing and Research Misplaced modifier: Sam bought a used car from a local dealer with a smoky tailpipe. Corrected version: Sam bought a used car with a smoky tailpipe from a local dealer.

Conventions, Writing and Research Dangling modifier: Sitting in the dentist’s chair, the sound of the drill made Larry sweat. Corrected version: As Larry was sitting in the dentist’s chair, the sound of the drill made him sweat.

Conventions, Writing and Research Which of the following sentences are written correctly? Covered with cobwebs and mold, we cleaned the cabinets with bleach. Covered with cobwebs and mold, bleach was used to clean the cabinets. The cabinets were cleaned by us with bleach covered with cobwebs and mold. Conventions, Writing and Research There are three modes of writing Expository Argument/Persuasion Narrative These are all structured in a way that benefits the author’s message usually  Main Idea & Supporting Details, Chronological Order, Cause and Effect, Comparison/Contrast etc. Author’s always consider their audience when choosing language!!!! They also decide on sources that best benefits their message Review: Primary Sources? Secondary Sources?
