Surface Enhanced Fluorescence in Polymer Semiconductors Sue A Surface Enhanced Fluorescence in Polymer Semiconductors Sue A. Carter,Physics Department, Univ. of California, Santa Cruz Fluorescence in Polymer Thin Film MEH-PPV was studied as a function of device structure: (1) no metal, (2) Ag mirror, and (3) Ag nanoparticles A substantial increase in PL occurs for polymer films (right) on Ag Nanoislands (below) vs. controls. PL enhancement in highest for LiF spacer films ~40 nm thick, an order of magnitude higher than for small dyes, due to the stronger quenching in polymers. Overall, we observe a maximum enhancement of 7x, the highest ever observed in a polymer thin film. We attribute this to surface enhanced fluorescence.
